Things to do in Estepona, Costa Del Sol

Once a small fishing village, Estepona is a quickly growing city on the Costa del Sol offering a plethora of things to do and places to see. Whether you are looking to visit the historical sights, enjoy the local nature at a wildlife park, shop 'till you drop or golf under the beautiful Costa del Sol sun, Estepona has a bit of something for all of us.

Beaches around Estepona

La Rada Beach
Right in the centre of Estepona and the towns most popular beach, La Rada Beach. It is quite expansive and backed by a modern sea front promenade for the entire length (2.6km). Chiringuitos (beach bars), are located throughout the seafront and serve traditional fare, such as paella and fresh sardines, or a choice of international-style dishes. The Marina is located at the west end of La Rada beach.

El Cristo Beach
Situated just outside the town, to the west of the Marina El Cristo beach is situated in a delightful sheltered cove, ideal for children, with two new chiringuitos. It's ideal location means longer hours of sunshine, making it a particular favourite for serious sunbathers. This beach has become increasingly popular in recent years and tends to get quite crowded on summer weekends. It has a good atmosphere with music playing at two of the beach bars.

El Padron Beach
Located a few km to the east of the town (km 159.5) and just to the east of the Rio Padron, near the Kempinski Resort Hotel. The beach has a large car park and two beach bars which means that it is particularly popular in the summer.

Quieter beaches can be found a few km to the east or west of the town. Try Playa del Castor just to the east, or Rio Castor at km 160.5. There is a track down to the beach from the main road, under the bridge and through the allotments. Even on a Sunday during the height of summer, chances are you will be alone. Don't forget to take the essentials: a good book and something to drink!

The Costa Natura
Spain's first purpose built naturist complex is located to the east of the town at km 151. The complex is for members only, but temporary membership is available for touring naturists and the uninhibited curious. The beach here is, of course, open to the public and is officially classified 'naturist'.

Estepona Marina

The Estepona Marina is situated at the west end of the seafront promenade. This is a very pleasant place for a stroll and there are some magnificent boats moored here. There are also a wide variety of excellent bars and restaurants, open both midday and in the evening while younger revelers can enjoy the late night disco bars. There is a popular tourist market here on a Sunday morning.

After midnight (especially in the summer season) the port comes alive. Numerous night clubs and discos seem to materialise from nowhere. Most of them cater for the young and energetic. Visitors will be amazed to see the very young and the very old dancing the traditional Andalucían Sevillana well into the early (and not so early) hours of the morning. Renaldo's on the corner is a favourite meeting place, 'Chico Diez' is one of the liveliest and 'Attico' the place to be at the moment.

Estepona Marina

The fishing port is located to the west of the marina. Here you can watch the fishing boats land their catch. This can take place throughout the day, but is generally during the early morning, mid afternoon, and late at night. It is not possible to buy fish but you can watch the auction process (as long as you don't get in the way) which is followed by the covering of the fish pallets with ice and loading them into the insulated vans for distribution to local suppliers.

The large and small fishing boats are located in the fishing port adjacent (east) to the marina. Watch the catch landed, iced, sold and transported away. Notice the fisherman's lock - ups where they store materials, mend nets and have parties. Try the excellent fish restaurant here

Golf Estepona Golf club

A popular, family-run course with a challenging layout, particularly when windy.

In contrast with larger, more manicured courses, the natural appearance is maintained with wild flora and fauna still much in evidence just off the fairways. The signature hole is the third, a very long par 5 known as "The Ski Slope", though the difficulties lie more in club selection when assessing ground relief. Greens are of good quality, well-designed and interesting to play.

Since it opened in 1989, Estepona has invested to improve course drainage as the high clay content of the terrain is noticeable on rainy days

Tennis Estepona Tennis Club

Football

Estepona has a minor league amateur football club that competes against other towns in the vicinity every Sunday afternoon. The games take place at the Stadium Avenida Santo Tomás. In addition, a number of minor clubs play on Saturdays at the pitch at the top of the Ave Juan Carlos.

Five-a-side football pitches can be hired from the Municipal Sports Centre, Avenida Santo Tomás and the La Viña municipal Sports Centre at Calle Alcalá Galiano, s/n and the Municipal Covered Pavilion Camino de la Lobilla.

Basketball
